1. In the year that King Uzziah
died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train
of his robe filled the temple.
2. Above him were seraphs, each with six wings: With two wings they covered
their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were
flying.
3. And they were calling to one another: "Holy, holy, holy is the
LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory."
4. At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and
the temple was filled with smoke.
5. "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of
unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have
seen the King, the LORD Almighty."
6. Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which
he had taken with tongs from the altar.
7. With it he touched my mouth and said, "See, this has touched your
lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for."
8. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, "Whom shall I send?
And who will go for us?" And I said, "Here am I. Send me!"
14. Again Jesus called the
crowd to him and said, "Listen to me, everyone, and understand this.
15. Nothing outside a man can make him `unclean' by going into him. Rather,
it is what comes out of a man that makes him `unclean.' "
17. After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked
him about this parable.
18. "Are you so dull?" he asked. "Don't you see that nothing
that enters a man from the outside can make him `unclean'?
19. For it doesn't go into his heart but into his stomach, and then out
of his body." (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods "clean.")
20. He went on: "What comes out of a man is what makes him `unclean.'
21. For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality,
theft, murder, adultery,
22. greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.
23. All these evils come from inside and make a man `unclean.'"
5. Those who live according
to the sinful nature have their minds set on what that nature desires;
but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set
on what the Spirit desires.
6. The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit
is life and peace;
7. the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law,
nor can it do so.
8. Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
