12. `Even now,` declares the
LORD, `return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and
mourning.`
13. Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God,
for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love,
and he relents from sending calamity.
14. Who knows? He may turn and have pity and leave behind a blessing--
grain offerings and drink offerings for the LORD your God.
25. `I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten-- the great
locust and the young locust, the other locusts and the locust swarm --
my great army that I sent among you.
1. Now when he saw the crowds,
he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,
2. and he began to teach them, saying:
3. "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
4. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.
5. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
6. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they
will be filled.
7. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
8. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
9. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
10. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
7. Submit yourselves, then,
to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you
sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9. Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy
to gloom.
10. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.
